First, there was the Ford Transit Connect and then the Ram C/V, and now the 2013 Nissan NV200 will join the small,
light-duty commercial van marketplace.

You may have seen the 2013 Nissan NV200 before,
especially if you live in New York City. The compact cargo van was selected to
be the Big
Apple’s next-generation taxi cab late last year. The model was also
presented in an electrified version, known as the e-NV200, at the 2012 Detroit auto show.

The gas model will be powered by a small 2.0-liter
four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission; there’s
a similar setup on most Nissan Sentra models. Don’t let the small displacement
fool you. Nissan says the model can carry up to 1,500 pounds, which is 100
pounds short of the Transit Connect’s capacity. Unlike the Transit Connect, the
NV200 can only seat two people; Ford’s van can be configured to carry five
people. We expect Nissan to eventually come out with a passenger version of the
model to complement its other commercial van, the full-size NV series.

Overall, the mini cargo van has 123 cubic feet of cargo space, which is 6.6
cubic feet less than the Transit Connect and 21.4 less than the Ram Cargo
Van.

The NV200′s diminutive size does have its advantages, though. Nissan says the
model will offer the “best possible fuel economy and an affordable price.”

The model comes standard with dual sliding doors, 40/60-split rear doors, a
six-way manual adjustable driver’s seat, power windows, laptop/file hanging
storage and 12-volt plugs on the instrument panel and rear console area.
Available features include a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, backup
camera and a multimedia system called Nissan Fleet Tracker, which can be used
for business logistics.

The model goes on sale in early in 2013. Pricing, fuel economy and power
specs weren’t made available at the reveal.

Nissan’s Pathfinder concept teaser image reveals big, pontoonlike fenders.
(Credit: Nissan)
As with many previews for the upcoming Detroit auto show, Nissan made few details of its new Pathfinder concept known.

The press release merely promises a new platform and aerodynamic body. The teaser photo for the Pathfinder concept released today reveals big fenders in the update to Nissan’s seven-passenger SUV.

We bumped up the brightness of the released image to bring out more detail. The fenders show a particularly strong, pontoonlike design, sticking out from a body with a heavily contoured beltline. The side windows also look quite large, but the roofline looks conventional.

Nissan says the concept will feature “thoughtful technology, comfortable seating for seven, and ample cargo room,” along with four-wheel drive. The current Pathfinder has three-row seating and four-wheel drive. Mention of a new platform suggests Nissan will move the vehicle from its current truck frame to a unibody design. It is possible that the new Pathfinder will share a platform with the Infiniti JX, unveiled at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Nissan noted that the new generation of the Pathfinder will go on sale next fall, as a 2013 model year. The concept shown in Detroit must be near production-ready.

Bloomberg NewsNissan, whose U.S. sales in November grew 19%, aims to surpass rival Honda as the No. 2 Japanese brand in America. Above, a Florida dealer.

“I can’t see any excuse for not overtaking Honda in the U.S. market,” Nissan Executive Vice President Colin Dodge said in an interview earlier this week.

Noting that Nissan outsells Honda everywhere the two brands compete globally except the U.S. and Thailand, Mr. Dodge said targeting his Japanese rival is crucial to Nissan’s quest to boost its U.S. market share to 10% from the current 8%.

“I find it unthinkable that Nissan won’t be at 10% of the market,” he said. “It’s just a matter of when.”

Honda’s U.S. market share has fallen to 9.1% so far this year, compared with 10.6% at this time last year. Toyota Motor Corp. is the leading Japanese auto brand in the U.S., with 12.6% of the market.

As it is for Honda, the U.S. is a key market for Nissan and second only to China globally. Nissan’s sales in the U.S. rose 18% to 908,570 vehicles last year, compared with a 7% U.S. sales gain by Honda to 1.2 million vehicles. Nissan said Thursday that its U.S. sales in November increased 19% from a year earlier to 85,182 autos amid strong demand for the company’s Rouge compact sport-utility vehicle and Frontier pickup truck.

Nissan has high hopes for growth in the compact segment that Honda dominates in the U.S. with its Civic model. The latest generation of that Honda vehicle has received negative reviews for poor handling and substandard quality, prompting questions about whether the Civic will remain the top-selling compact in the U.S.

Honda President Takanobu Ito acknowledged the cool reception for the new Civic on Tuesday, telling reporters in Tokyo that he took personal responsibility for the problematic launch. “There are mixed opinions of views about the Civic in the U.S. market,” Mr. Ito said. “I believe that ultimate responsibility rests with me.”

People familiar with Honda’s plans say it will likely pull forward a midcycle refresh of the Civic for the 2013 model year, which goes on sale next fall. Normally, such face-lifts don’t occur until two to three years after a launch.

The Civic’s problems signal opportunity for other compact vehicles, such as Ford Motor Co.’s Focus and Hyundai Motor Co.’s Elantra. Mr. Dodge said that Nissan also wants a larger slice of that market with its latest-generation compact, the Versa.

“Nissan’s never been represented in that segment with a market share or profit base up to our potential, so we are expecting a lot from our new Versa,” the British-born executive said.

Mr. Dodge added that he wants the car, which is made at a Nissan plant in Mexico, to grab 10% of the compact market “within two to three years,” up from the high single-digit percentages currently.

Nissan also plans to upgrade the engine in its Titan full-size pickup truck and seek to double that vehicle’s U.S. sales, he said.

In a sign of Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn‘s confidence in Mr. Dodge, he is in charge of all regions globally except China and Japan. In June, the Nissan board member added North, South and Central America to his existing regional responsibilities for Africa, Europe, India and the Middle East.

Mr. Dodge, whose first automotive job was as a night-shift manager in the former Rover Cowley plant, joined Nissan in 1984 and spent the next 26 years at the company’s U.K. operations. In 2007, after leading the auto maker’s U.K. supply-chain management, he was named a global senior vice president in charge of emerging markets, including China.

In addition, CEO Ghosn named Mr. Dodge “chief recovery officer” amid the onset of the global financial crisis in 2009, a year when the company’s world-wide sales slid 9.4%. Mr. Dodge’s title was switched to global performance officer earlier this year after Nissan’s world-wide sales rebounded in 2010, rising 22% to 4.1 million vehicles.

“Ghosn takes the strategy and I try to relieve him of the grubby details of getting the job done on a daily basis. It seems to work quite well,” Mr. Dodge said.

Among the senior executive’s goals for the U.S. is an improvement in customer service and inventory control. He said that U.S. dealerships might be encouraged to use Apple Inc.’s iPads, something that Nissan has done successfully in Mexico.

Mr. Dodge wants to drastically cut the number of cars sitting in lots and in transit in the U.S. by “pushing” hotter products instead of waiting for orders to “pull” them to showrooms. Stockpiled inventories in Europe have been nearly eliminated for models such as the Qashqai, a crossover vehicle sold as the Rogue in the U.S., he said.

They “go straight from our factory to our dealers, as if they were still warm” from the assembly line, Mr. Dodge said, adding that the streamlining has improved free cash flow and improved relations with Nissan dealers.

If implemented in the U.S. and elsewhere, Mr. Dodge said the strategy could boost global operating profit as much as 1%. As part of Nissan’s midterm plan, the company has targeted raising its operating-profit margin to 8% by early 2017 from 6.1% in 2010.

—Mike Ramsey in Detroit contributed to this article.

The special 20th Anniversary Package includes 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, fog lights, rear spoiler, automatic auto on/off headlights, leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, HomeLink® Universal Transceiver and additional equipment.
Altima, which is now in its fourth generation, is the best-selling nameplate in the Nissan lineup and brings many first-time Nissan buyers into the brand. It has also been the second best selling car in the U.S. in 2011 (through October, trucks excluded), ahead of Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Ford Fusion. Sales in 2011 to date are up 18.3 percent. Altima has also won numerous awards from independent consumer organizations in recent years. Altima has also been made in the United States throughout its history, originally in Smyrna and later Canton, Miss. (in addition to Smyrna) and is now exported from the U.S. to many countries around the world.

“We want to acknowledge Altima’s first two decades and how much it has meant to the company — and reward loyal Altima customers with this special 20th Anniversary equipment package,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “From its uncertain beginnings, Altima has grown to be a real power nameplate for Nissan in the competitive mid-size segment — a position we intend to hold for many more anniversaries to come.”

RICK KRANZ

Nissan promises quiet and safety with large passenger van

November 9, 2011 -

Early this year Nissan introduced a full-sized commercial panel van that’s offered in two flavors — standard and tall; as in, you can walk around the interior.

So it was just a matter of time until Nissan targeted the hotel shuttle and church bus crowd with a windowed passenger model using that platform.

First impression is that Nissan’s windowed van is a very credible competitor for a segment that has been dominated by the Ford E series and the Chevrolet Express, and to a lesser degree by the GMC Savana and Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter.

Nissan’s new model is called the NV3500 HD Passenger Van — it seats 12, is offered with a V-6 or V-8, and will be available at about a third of Nissan’s dealerships in the spring. Nissan introduced the van at a press event in Detroit on Tuesday. And while Nissan did not talk about pricing, the van might have a price advantage because the standard engine has six-cylinders, vs. eight in the Ford and Chevy. A diesel is not offered.

The passenger van is based on the standard commercial van. Hotels wanting a tall, walk-around model will need to search out converters.

The van’s shape takes a little time to get accustomed to. The vehicle has a long nose; Nissan essentially took a Titan pickup cab and added a long box to hold passengers. The Ford and General Motors models have a considerably shorter nose because the engine is positioned closer to the driver.

Nissan says the downside of the Ford and GM configuration is that engine noise and heat is closer to the passenger compartment. There was no opportunity to drive the Nissan vehicle to check those levels.

Of course, the longer hood for the Nissan model has its own potential shortcoming, meaning parking. The Nissan model is 23.9 inches longer than a 2012 Ford E-350 Super Duty regular length model, which also seats 12.

While Nissan expects the majority of its passenger vans to serve as hotel and parking lot shuttles, 15 percent are expected to end up with retail customers. Among the available features for that crowd are leather seating surfaces, navigation system, XM satellite radio and rear-view camera.

Nissan won’t predict sales for the passenger van. Last year Ford sold 23,799 Club Wagons, the E Series model with windows, plus 84,459 panel vans, for a total of 108,258. Nissan did not sell any full-sized vans last year. Sales began this past spring, and through October Nissan has sold 3,976 panel vans.

How big is the market? Last year, the industry sold 190,765 full-sized vans (panel and window versions combined), a 20 percent increase from the previous year. Sales are up 18 percent for the 10-month period this year over 2010.

Nissan gets a thumbs-up in terms of safety. Headrests are standard for all seating positions, and side curtain air bags are standard for all four rows of occupants. Chevrolet, GMC and Ford do not offer these features. Additionally, integrated seat belts are standard for all rear seating positions. That means there are no belts hanging from the ceiling or attached to an interior panel. Instead, each belt is incorporated into the seat.

The van’s second, third and fourth row seats are removable, and Nissan claims 324 seat configurations.

And here’s another thumb’s up: A common-sense solution for the fourth row beach seat. Nissan has a 50-50 split seat for the fourth row, which makes removal easier. It takes two adults to remove the heavy, bench seat in some other full-sized vans.

In terms of power, two engines are available: a 261-hp double-overhead cam 24-valve 4.0-liter V-6 with 281 pounds feet of torque and a 317-hp 5.6-liter double-overhead 32-valve V-8 with 385 pounds feet of torque.

Both engines have continuous valve timing control and are matched to a heavy-duty five-speed automatic transmission. A 28-gallon fuel tank is standard. Miles per gallon is not reported for vehicles having a gross vehicle weight above 8,500 pounds.

The Nissan NV3500 HD will be assembled in Canton, Miss., and will be available at certified Nissan commercial vehicle dealers.

I can’t remember the last time an automaker called a press conference to introduce a completely new van. A Nissan executive said the automaker spent more time researching the van segment than the market for any other model it developed for the North America.

Simply, Nissan did its homework, especially on the safety side.

2013 Nissan GT-R Gains 15 Horsepower to 545 HP Total

Nissan’s Multi-Dimensional Supercar Receives Engine and Suspension Refinements for New Model Year; Set to Arrive at Select Certified Nissan Dealers Nationwide in January 2012

FRANKLIN, Tenn., Nov. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Since its introduction, the iconic Nissan GT-R has had one goal in mind – never rest on its laurels. One of the most acclaimed supercars in automotive history, the Nissan GT-R is the ultimate expression of the Nissan brand and its “Innovation for All” philosophy. A multi-dimensional performance machine that lives up to the concept of “the ultimate supercar that can be driven by anyone, anytime, anywhere,” the Nissan GT-R receives a number of engine and suspension refinements for the 2013 model year, all designed to enhance its already legendary performance.

“The 2013 Nissan GT-R once again sends a bold statement that it remains on the leading edge of international sports car design, technology and performance,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. “It’s our desire to keep pushing the envelope, to never settle for second best or second place – a philosophy that makes Nissan GT-R one of the most coveted and affordable supercars in the world today.”

The major refinements to GT-R’s renowned engineering masterpiece of an engine include improved intake efficiency, reduced airflow resistance including an enlarged air intake duct for the intercooler, and improved exhaust emissions efficiency and enhanced control. The engine is hand-assembled in a special clean room, similar to racing powerplant construction. As a result, horsepower is rated at 545 hp, an increase of 15 hp over the 2012 GT-R’s 530 hp. Similarly, torque has been increased to 463 lb-ft from 448 lb-ft.

Transmission shift feel and quietness have been refined through a strengthened design of the shift fork arm and a firmer fixing bearing for the flywheel housing. Also, high performance differential oil, used in GT-R motorsports competition, is now standard for production models.

In addition, the suspension has been retuned and a handmade dry carbon rear spoiler has also been added to the Nissan GT-R Black Edition model. Other enhancements include the addition of a new blue lighting treatment inside the tachometer ring to match the shift position indicator light, helping provide a more sophisticated cockpit atmosphere. A RearView Monitor is now standard on all models.

The 2013 Nissan GT-R is scheduled to go on sale at select certified Nissan dealers in January 2012.

About the 2013 Nissan GT-R

Following a major revision just last year, the 2013 Nissan GT-R is offered in two models – GT-R Premium and the GT-R Black Edition with special lightweight black aluminum forged RAYS® wheels, unique read and black interior, Recaro® leather-appointed seats and new dry carbon fiber rear spoiler. The 2013 Nissan GT-R is once again anchored by an advanced 3.8-liter twin turbo V6 engine matched with a high-performance 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. Engine efficiency has been improved for the new model year, which helps raise horsepower to 545 hp (versus the previous 530 horsepower) and torque to 463 lb-ft (versus the previous 448 lb-ft). The engine is hand-assembled in a special clean room.

GT-R is built on an exclusive Premium Midship platform, which enables the use of the world’s first independent rear transaxle ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system. This system places the transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear of the vehicle, optimizing weight distribution and maximizing handling capability.

Total vehicle adjustability is provided by a “set-up switch” located in the center of the instrument panel, enabling the driver to adjust transmission shifts, shock absorbers and the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC-R) among three settings – Normal, Special or “R,” for ultimate handling.

The Nissan GT-R suspension has been retuned for 2013. The vehicle again utilizes a special Bilstein DampTronic system, and the braking system consists of Brembo full-floating drilled rotors, low steel high stiffness brake pads and Brembo monoblock six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.

The 2013 Nissan GT-R’s lightweight 10-spoke forged aluminum 20-inch RAYS® wheels feature a premium dark (near black) finish, which provides a high quality, high-performance look. They are mounted with Dunlop Sports Max GT 600 DSST CTT tires – P255/40ZRF20 in front and P285/35ZRF20 in the rear. The Black Edition features special metallic black six-spoke RAYS® lightweight wheels with Dunlop Sports Max GT 600 DSST CTT tires – P255/40ZRF20 in front and P285/35ZRF20 in the rear.

Nissan GT-R’s aerodynamics were improved last year with increased downforce and the coefficient of drag reduced to 0.26 (from 0.27). A new front fascia with aggressive double rectifier fins and integrated high intensity LED running lights was also added, enhancing the car’s strong visual presence. Other exterior features include high-mounted LED stoplights, bright LED rear combination taillights, “super wide beam” headlights, heated door mirrors and flat-blade windshield wipers. Six exterior colors are available for 2013: Deep Blue Pearl, Jet Black, Solid Red, Gun Metallic, Pearl White and a 4-stage metallic Super Silver.

Inside, Nissan GT-R’s four-passenger cabin again balances functionality with a sense of ease and comfort. It features sculpted performance bucket seats for an optimal driving position, a cockpit-style instrument panel with a large center-mounted tachometer and multi-function display – which includes mechanical and driving information, as well as an on-board driving recorder, and carbon fiber trim. The Black Edition adds custom red and black Recaro® leather-appointed seats, red and black interior trim and a dark headliner.

A specially designed 11-speaker Bose® sound system with speakers mounted in rigid aluminum die cast panels, which provides sound quality suitable for a supercar, is standard. Additional standard equipment for 2013 includes a RearView Monitor, Nissan Navigation System with XM NavTraffic® with Real-Time Traffic Information and NavWeather(TM) capabilities (XM® subscription required, sold separately), and Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System.

Safety equipment includes a Nissan Advanced Air Bag System for driver and front passenger, front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags for driver and front-passenger and standard roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags for front seat occupant head protection – along with front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters and tension reducers, and three-point ELR/ALR rear seat belts.

The 2013 Nissan GT-R is sold and serviced through nearly 700 Nissan dealers that have attained “GT-R Certification” status by meeting a number of strict sales, service and facilities commitments – including dedicating a master technician to GT-R service, special training for service managers and technicians, and designating dealer principals, executive managers and general managers as the primary communicators and negotiators in sales transactions. The names and locations of local GT-R Certified Nissan dealers are available on NissanUSA.com.

The Yokohama Marine Tower was lit up Wednesday night courtesy of electricity from the batteries in a Nissan Leaf.

Nissan is lending some battery power to the local 106-meter-tall Japanese landmark in Yokohama, the capital city of the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan, which is located about 27 miles south of Tokyo.

In fact, the tower’s night twinkle will be powered by a Nissan Leaf channeling electricity to the tower from its batteries via a connected power control system until November 6.

The publicity stunt is part of the Yokohama Marine Tower’s 50th Anniversary celebration and Yokohama Port’s 150th anniversary celebration. It’s also, not doubt, an attempt to inject some levity into to what has been a shaky year for Nissan’s new electric car, as well as Japan.

The tower, which looks like a cross between the Eiffel Tower and a lighthouse, was built in 1961 to commemorate the port’s 100th anniversary and since then has seen more than 25 million visitors. It’s famous for offering an unlimited view of Mount Fuji from its observation deck.

Why Yokohama? Well, aside from being the location of Nissan’s world headquarters, the city is also known for striving to be one of the most environmental cities in Japan.
